The utilitarian school of thought maintains that the consequences determine the moral worth of an action. By assigning value to innocent and murderous human life, and accepting the best bet argument, one may deduce that capital punishment is an effective deterrent. Yet the deontological view calls us to consider that optimal consequences, much less actual consequences have really, nothing to do with moral and ethical issues when the issue is contemplated more deeply.
